Welaka kids ride south to Crescent City.
Welaka is a small St. Johns River town in south Putnam County. The Town of Welaka government site confirms that students living within the town are zoned to Middleton-Burney Elementary School (PK–6) and Crescent City Junior-Senior High School (7–12), both located in Crescent City.1 The former George C. Miller Middle School operation has been consolidated into Crescent City Jr.-Sr. High, which now serves grades 7–12 in one campus.1
That means everything in this guide is the same set of schools we cover on our Crescent City schools page, with the Welaka-specific commute and zoning details laid out below. Every claim is footnoted to a primary source.

The Welaka commute
Welaka sits about 13 miles north of Crescent City via US-17. By car, the elementary school is roughly 18 minutes away and the high school a couple of minutes farther south.9 School-bus rides take longer than the car drive because of stops along the route, so we always recommend asking PCSD Transportation for the projected route time for a specific Welaka address before committing to a property — especially if your kids are early-risers or have after-school activities to consider.
Why Welaka families think carefully about schools
Welaka is a true small Florida river town — population in the few hundreds, no traffic light on US-17 through town, more boats than school buses. That's the appeal, and it's also the school-decision context. There is no in-town public-school option, and that's not changing: PCSD's south-Putnam feeder zone has been consolidated into Crescent City for years.1 Families who choose Welaka are choosing a slower pace of life, river access, and lower home prices, and accepting that schools are a 13-mile drive south. For many of our clients — retirees with grandkids who visit, families with older teens who drive themselves, or families on the river specifically for the lifestyle — that tradeoff is exactly right. For families with three young kids and a tight morning schedule, it can be more than they bargained for. We'll talk it through with you honestly when you tour a Welaka home.

What this means for Welaka home-buyers
Welaka is one of those small Putnam towns where the school question is really a question about the commute. A few things to think through before you buy:
1. Bus rides are real. A 13-mile car drive doesn't sound like much, but a school bus stopping every quarter-mile along US-17 turns it into a 35–45-minute ride one way. For elementary-age kids, that can mean a 6:15 a.m. bus on a 7:45 first-bell. Always ask PCSD Transportation for the projected route time for the specific Welaka address you're considering before you commit.10
2. After-school activities mean parent driving. Sports, band, FFA, drama, clubs — anything that doesn't end at the regular bell typically means a 14-mile parent drive to Crescent City and back. Many Welaka families coordinate ride shares with neighbors in town to make this manageable.
3. Welaka families have the same school options as Crescent City families. The flip side of being in the south-Putnam zone is that every Cambridge International, Gifted & Talented, AP, and CTE program at Middleton-Burney and Crescent City Jr.-Sr. High is available to Welaka kids — and so is the Q.I. Roberts choice option if you're willing to drive across the county.613
